We invite all Shackelford County residents to contribute to an exciting new project: a book celebrating the rich history of our county over the past 150 years. Just as our community came together in 1976 for the bicentennial, we're now gathering stories for the sesquicentennial. Share a short paragraph or two about the people, businesses, sports teams, organizations, or any other aspects of our local history that have shaped our community. Please note that submissions should be concise, and the book editor may edit for clarity and length if needed. Submit your contributions today and be a part of preserving our history for future generations!
Carlile Texaco
The Texaco station at 400 South Main Street was built in 1928 by Earl D. Lieb, who still owns it. The small brick station had been operated for six years by Robert Carlile until his death on March 29 of this year. Mrs. Carlile and son Keith now have the business. They are assisted by Alton Hallmark.
First operator of the station was W. H. Cook of Breckenridge, who sold to Milton Lewallen and Robert Echols Sr. Echols and Lewallen ran it for 12 years. Other owners have been Carl Kunkel, Hugh Ayres, Tom and Dale Garrett. The place got a face lift and coat of paint this year.
